Flore Sigrist was born in an Alsacian village on April 7th, 1985.
Nothing in her immediate environment could reveal what would become a most extraordinary fate. Her arrival in life sent her hurtling into a world of sufferings: after three years spent between home and hospital, she was forced to face up to her father’s ill health.
Flore Sigrist arrives at auction
In 2011, a young Franco-Swiss artist, Flore Sigrist, was in the spotlight. Never having been sold at auction before (source: Artnet), her work erupted into a sale of contemporary art and reached considerably more that the catalogue estimated. The acrylic on canvas reproduced here sold for € 72 000, and another smaller one (150 x 150 cm), also from 2010, reached € 44 000. A child prodigy, Flore began painting large canvases at the age of seven. Her work is now sought after by international collectors and institutions such as the FRAC (French Regional Contemporary Art Collection) Alsace. The young woman is praised in the sales catalogue by Alain Renner, Director of Sotheby’s France, who writes: “She refuses all fashions and concessions. Her swirls of shape and colour contrast calmness and immobility with the frenzy of her gesture. This is a production where each element is reinvented by her; there is a permanent challenge in each piece”. Flore Sigrist is not limited to an abstract vocabulary, as evidenced by her “Barbies” series, where she subverts the famous doll in order, as Pascal Neveux, Director of the FRAC Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, has commented, to express “the masochist enslavement to this ideal of beauty”… An artist to keep an eye on.
